    I’m not surprised by anything PETA does anymore. They’re the absolute worst. Look, I’m all for anti-cruelty when it comes to the way we treat animals, but there is definitely a way to take it overboard, and, well, PETA waved bye-bye to sensibility long ago.

    Their latest victim is the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s fishing team. According to PETA, fishing sends a bad message, especially when it’s for “sport,” and they want UAB to disband their team. Yeah, because we all know fish serve a higher purpose on this Earth other than feeding us.

  • Movie Review: The Other Guys

    Well, Spumor, the impending new school year is officially upon me. Somehow I managed to squeeze in a viewing of The Other Guys on the itinerary between sunbathing my whiskey bloat and practicing my karate holds for Monday’s Dangerous Minds impersonation.

    Seriously, God love ninth graders. “Ms. G I know you just recounted the no tolerance sleeping policy, but does that apply to us that got chilrens?” My ninth graders are utterly baffled when I explain to them that the closest thing I have to a child is a gluttonous bulldog named Brutus. Seriously, at twenty-four they expect me to be a grandmother. HA! Just recently my anonymous family member’s child (and I use that term loosely) came to stay with me for a couple of hours so my neurotic mother could take my grandmother out for a good time at her local utopia, Goodwill.

  • Rey Rey Gets a Break

    Roger Goodell decided yesterday not to suspend Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga for his February DUI.

    Instead, Maualuga will have to fork over two game checks and a small portion of his 2010 bonus.

    I’m guessing Commissioner Goodell figures the lingering embarrassment from blowing a girly .157 then pinballing down a city street in a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire is punishment enough. I kind of agree. Rey Rey got arrested in February and I’m still embarrassed for him.

  • The Ole 'Overtrained Athlete Syndrome' Excuse

    Brian Cushing and the Houston Texans aren’t letting his four-game suspension go without a fight.

    Or without making up new medical conditions.

    Texans owner Bob McNair met with Commissioner Roger Goodell Tuesday to ask the commish to reconsider the punishment dealt to Cushing, the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, for testing positive for a fertility drug on the NFL’s list of banned substances last season. Cushing has maintained that he never took the drug, which is often used for revamping testosterone levels following a steroid cycle, and now he and the Texans organization are saying the positive test stemmed from a unique condition (and by unique I mean that I’m pretty sure he’s the only person who’s ever claimed to have it) called “overtrained athlete syndrome,” or what’s more commonly referred to as “bullshit.”

  • Albert Haynesworth: My New Favorite Player

    For some sick reason, I love when athletes fail. Maybe it’s waking up 5’10” every morning knowing I never stood a chance at being a pro in anything that doesn’t involve a Nerf ball. Maybe it’s knowing that no matter how many terrible decisions I’ve made in my life, someone with a lot more on the line is making even worse choices. Either way, when a high-profile athlete goes down in a blaze of disgrace, my ego gets a super boost.

    Some might call this being bitter. I prefer to think of it as, well, being bitter pretty much nails it. But let’s not get wrapped up in semantics.

    Regardless of what you call it, Albert Haynesworth might be my new favorite player because of it.

  • Reviews That Matter: Dodger Stadium vs. Wrigley Field

    We've all seen a ton of ballpark reviews written by baseball fans.  They travel the country trying to catch a game in as many stadiums as possible. Then they tell you what their favorite field is, which always seems to be their home field or Fenway Park. Well the days of these biased reviews are over. I'm stepping in as the reviewer with no agenda. The reviewer that doesn't care about baseball.  Because non-baseball fans deserve to have ballparks reviewed by one of their own. What other major professional sport has seats cheap enough to let people go that have no interest in the game?  There are none! So check out how Dodger Stadium compares to Wrigley Field, two ballparks I was lucky enough to visit within a week of each other.

  • Movie Review: Inception

    FINALLY! Thank you Christopher Nolan for making a truly mind bending summer blockbuster! Upon leaving this movie, I was finally able to forget about the 3-D glasses covered in teardrops and broken dreams that filled my purse.

    Inception absolutely lives up to all the hype.  Who knew there was still an ounce of originality left in Hollywood?  This movie is a catastrophic brain tease that will leave you feeling like you are back in AP Calculus, or in my case Algebra I. I could not tell if I needed an Advil due to my close proximity to the screen, or if my brain was just throbbing in my skull because it is not used to working that hard. I was literally as baffled as the newlywed mother on Jerry Springer who persistently cannot comprehend how she gave birth to a mixed baby, or that guy on How to Catch a Predator that just came for cookies and milk not understanding why he is being reeled off in a squad car.

  • Movie Review: The Last Airbender

    Don’t worry Spumor fans there will absolutely be no vitamin deficient vampires on this site. My weeklong family vacation to Branson, MO was torturous enough.

    CIA take note because water boarding appears seemingly lax in comparison to a Gale family “vacation.” My mother cannot drive due to an unusually rare eye condition known as Blepharospasms which results in constant muscle contractions. My sister conveniently suffers from severe motion sickness that is seemingly immune to Dramamine, which left me as the sole able-bodied driver. The logical vehicle of choice for our mountainous trek? My mother’s new Prius, which she absolutely refuses to switch off of eco mode. I believe at one point I was actually passed by a Hoveround owned by one of Branson’s indigenous species, the elusive retiree.

Lo and behold, three jackass teenage boys walked in and instantly gave me the, “Aw, she’s pathetic” look and laughed among themselves at my expense as if I wasn’t seated a row behind them. As I dribbled chili cheese nachos with extra jalapenos all over my lap, I began to ponder. Why is it so taboo to go to the movies by yourself?

  • Movie Review: Robin Hood

    I went to this movie slightly hungover and loaded with a stomach full of Advil, Chinese food, and Pepto Bismol, but I would have been dozing off regardless.  This movie was not an utter failure, but I actually don’t think it is possible for Ridley Scott to make a dismal movie. However, this movie was two hours and thirty minutes of pure and utter mediocrity.
